A programmable dot matrix piece by Lauren Lee McCarthy and Casey Reas

Displayed on a programmable LED dot matrix road sign, AUTO TUNE is an anthem about tensions between autonomy, control, and artificial intelligence. The work runs ambiently as a two-minute sequence of hand-drawn, low-resolution phrases. The looping sequence of poetic commands and provocations—“BE AUTO,” “GET LOOSE,” “AUTO TUNE”—evoke the rhythms of highway signage and algorithmic suggestion. The work can be reconfigured to run on any LED dot matrix road sign.

HEY YOU
TOTALLY AUTO
DON’T THINK
JUST FOLLOW
GET RIGHT
BE NICE
WANT MORE
BETTER DIRECTION
GOOD SIGN
GET TOGETHER
GET AWAY
STAY AWARE
DON’T STOP
GET FREE
BE AUTO
GO THERE
BE LOUD
GET LOOSE
STOP DRIVING
LOSE CONTROL
TURN ON
SING ALONG
BE YOURSELF
AUTO TUNE
GOOD SIGN
GET TOGETHER
GET AWAY
STAY AWARE
DON’T STOP
GET FREE
BE AUTO
GO THERE
DON’T WORRY
FEEL GOOD
WHO’S WATCHING?
NO CONTROL
WIND DOWN
REST STOP
FALL ASLEEP
NOTHING’S REAL
