Opening Captions is research and protoptying toward a video captioning tool that expands the possibilities for accessibility in film. The tool aims to enable greater control over the styling and placement of captions, supporting a wider range of creative expression while making video content more accessible to people who are d/Deaf, hard of hearing, foreign language speakers, or have other disabilities. The research, design, and technical development of this tool intends to support other filmmakers in making their work more accessible, while aiming to open a pathway for more widespread integration of accessibility practices across film/video streaming and screening platforms.
